Plot
In 1980s Indiana, a group of young friends witness supernatural forces and secret government exploits. As they search for answers, the kids uncover a series of extraordinary mysteries. Steve Perry, former lead singer of Journey, said that the Stranger Things season 4 remix of Journey’s 1980 hit “Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)” was done pretty much the way he originally wanted it back in the 1980s, but didn’t have the technology. During several episodes, people are seen “interrupting” someone talking on a two-way or CB radio — that is, one person is talking/transmitting, and another person transmits to interrupt them, and then the other person hears the interruption and stops transmitting.
Eleven: Friends Don’t Lie
This was done a few times on the kids’ CB radios and on the radios used by police. These radios — the CB and police radios of the show’s era — don’t work that way. If you’re streaming and someone else is streaming, you won’t hear them. Stranger Things’ opening titles and fonts mimic the film grain and look of the opening credits of 1980s TV shows.

There’s no story-wise reason for Stranger Things to be set in the ’80s. But the ’80s vibe—the dial phones, the chain-smoking, Winona Ryder—are there to hint at the inspiration for this movie, which is pretty much every ’80s supernatural movie centered around kids.
What’s so wonderful is how spot-on this tribute is
It’s not just the costumes and hair, but the acting style, the approach to the script, the structure, all of it is true to its inspiration. You’ve got the nerdy kids, the horny and insecure teens, the monster, the mysterious guy with the power, the bad guys in science/government, the conflicted investigator, the tearful mother. You could argue that this entire season is simply a pastiche made up of recycled elements, and I wouldn’t disagree, but it really does feel less like a copy and more like something from that era, as if the writers had fallen into a coma in 1985, woken up, and gotten to work. While it doesn’t have the elevated style of the Spielberg films that are a primary influence, it does have the likability.
The story is consistently engaging and entertaining, the acting is excellent, and the film has enough laughs and tears to satisfy
