Townsman: [speaking of Marjorie Nugent] She’d kick your ass in a heartbeat
In a small town in Texas, an amiable undertaker forms a friendship with a rich widow, although when she begins to control him, he does everything possible to escape from her power. Real residents of Carthage, Texas, who knew the real Bernie Tidd and Marjorie Nugent, appear in the film, commenting on the events. Bernie committed murder in 1996, but he answers the call on his iPhone almost immediately after the murder. I mean, she’d tear your brand new, three bedroom, two bath, double wide ass.

The owner of the funeral home forms a friendship with a rich controlling business lady, which does not have good consequences. The film is shot as a documentary with interviews with people who knew the couple, as well as flashbacks to the stages of their relationship. The story flows well and holds your attention throughout the film.
It deserves a much higher rating than its current 68 (36,466 votes)
This is a good example of a black comedy that really works with a sparkling and very witty script with many well-marked and funny moments, but also with good dark drama. It has a strong cast with Jack Black as the popular undertaker. For me, the outstanding performance was Matthew McConaughey in the role of a charismatic policeman who asks to put Black behind bars. Bernie is one of those movies that you watch with low expectations, but which surprises you with how good it is. Highly recommended.
