A remake of El agente topo (2020)
Plot
Charles, a retired man, gets a new lease on life when he answers an ad from a private investigator and becomes the mole in an undercover investigation at a nursing home. Based on the Chilean documentary "El Agente Topo". Writing a review for this show requires knowledge of the context and content.
Having three parents dealing with the challenges of assisted living made it more enjoyable and more impactful
Ted Danson plays an octogenarian widower (Charles) who struggles to establish a new routine after the death of his wife due to dementia-related health issues. Through a series of classic sitcom plot devices, Charles lands a job as an undercover detective at an assisted living facility (as it was called a "nursing home") to solve a jewelry theft. His boss, Lila Richcreek Estrada as Julie, is a black-and-white, do-anything-to-solve-the-case, sarcastic foil to Danson’s kind-hearted and square Charles.
Also deadpan are the jokes and commentary about assisted living and the things that go on there
The two quickly clash with the facility’s director (well played by Stephanie Beatriz as Diddy), Charles’ daughter Emily (Mary Elizabeth Ellis), and the various residents and their very wacky problems. There are a few poorly conceived gags focused on older women being sores that don’t fit the rest of the stories, and Charles’ daughter’s outrageously disrespectful (and interchangeable) three teenage sons are distracting and throwaway. The best parts are Charles’ slow immersion in his new community with few social connections with other residents, especially Caleb, played by Stephen McKinley Henderson.
The awkward banter between Charles and his boss Julie is hilarious
And while daughter Emily’s home life isn’t all that interesting, it does set up some great scenes between her and Charles in the later episodes. The ending isn’t too hard to figure out (who stole what, and what’s going to happen to Charles), but the sentimental parts of Charles waking up and coming to terms with his wife’s death are very helpful. There are some small roles played by older stars (Sally Struthers, Veronica Cartwright) that might make older viewers smile, but they’re mostly wasted on silly jokes about old people and sex.
Overall, I recommend it, especially for viewers in their late forties and beyond
